Caregivers Sweating Blood Over Safety
Lebanon, New Jersey - March 21, 2006: Its late at
night and a noise wakes the family member. A quick search of the
house confirms her greatest fear: her mother, who suffers from
dementia, has left the house. A caregivers worst nightmare has
begun with the daughter walking the streets, checking with neighbors
and alerting the police.
Caring for relatives with dementia becomes an
exercise in safety precaution,
says Dementia Consultant Susan E. Lanza , the author of Nurturing
Nuggets For
Dementia Caregivers: 25 Supportive Strategies In Caring For Persons
With Dementia, a gift book for dementia caregivers which offers 25
nuggets of advice and comfort.
Safety awareness is extremely diminished in persons
with mild to moderate dementia and can lead to poor decisions.
Preparing in advance for problems can be a life saver for
caregivers says Lanza.
Instead of living a life of fear for the safety of
the person with dementia, there are
some simple precautions that caregivers can take, suggests Lanza.
Prevent a potential crisis by securing exits and other hazardous
areas, such as stairs. Consider help in increasing supervision and
keep a list of emergency contacts in an accessible location to grab
quickly, says Susan. Basic safety planning for persons with
dementia can decrease caregiver anxiety, concludes Lanza, and may
just save a life.
